When a business decides it needs software built, the first choice is often not what to build but who should build it. There are three common answers, and each one is right for some situations and wrong for others.
The three options at a glance
When a freelancer is the right answer
For a defined job, such as a landing page, a bug fix or a small integration, a good freelancer is hard to beat on price. The risk is dependence. If that person gets busy or disappears, the knowledge about your system goes with them. Ask for the code and documentation in your name from the first day.
When an agency is the right answer
A project with several moving parts, such as design, build, testing and launch, benefits from a team that has done it before and takes responsibility for the result. You pay for that coordination, and you should expect to. The cost to watch is change. A fixed price protects you only as long as the scope stays fixed, so agree how changes are handled before you start.
When a dedicated team is the right answer
If your roadmap never really ends, such as a product you keep improving, a dedicated team can make more sense than a series of projects. You get the same people week after week, who learn your business and need less explaining each time. The trade-off is that you carry the direction. A team can build what you ask for, but it is up to you to decide what comes next.
What each option costs
Honest comparisons are hard, because the three do not charge in the same way. For a dedicated team, the clearest comparison is with hiring the same person in the UAE. Take a mid-level backend developer. In the UAE, a salary of about AED 8,000 a month plus about AED 800 a month for visa, insurance and end-of-service gratuity comes to roughly AED 8,800. Our monthly retainer for the same role is about AED 5,250, which is about 40% less. That leaves out recruitment fees and equipment, so the comparison stays cautious. Across roles and seniority we see savings of 40 to 60%, and our resource augmentation page shows how the working is done.
A simple way to choose
- One task, clear brief, short deadline: a freelancer.
- One project, several skills, you want it handled: an agency.
- Continuing work, changing priorities: a dedicated team.
- Not sure yet: start with a scoping session or a discovery sprint, and let the plan show which model fits.
Many companies use a mix. A dedicated developer or two for the core product, and a freelancer for the odd design job. That is fine, as long as someone owns the whole picture.
